How to get that perfect manicured pinup look for your nails for less than £10 and no mess!
You may have spotted in my photos that I usually have polished claws. Now, I don’t have the time (or money!) to visit a nail technician on a regular basis and I’ve always been a bit nervous about damage to my nails – they’re pretty weak anyway! So when I found this solution, although sceptical at first, I was soon smitten! So, here’s my secret…
‘Express’ manicure nails – quick and easy to apply, pre-glued, false nails. They look real, they’re fairly durable and so low maintenance! My favourites are the Express Nails from Elegant Touch and the imPRESS Press on Manicure. Both available from most Boots or Superdrug stores.
I’ve found that the Elegant Touch range has more choice and they’ve just brought out a new, more vintage look which featured a more oval shape! Perfect!
So, the nails cost around £7.99 for 24 nails (depending on nail size and fit, you should be able to get two sets out of one pack!) and if applied properly (stay tuned for top tips!) they should last up to two weeks! They have a nice range of designs, many plain, but also some seasonal patterns… check out these Teal Deco nails that I used recently from Elegant Touch… so pretty!
But why stop there? If you are creative, or just know what you want on your nails, but can’t find your look, why not create it! Handily, both companies do white or pale skin coloured nails so you can design and paint way to your hearts content! Here is a shot of my current, Christmas nails….
I wanted to add the half moon details to make them a bit more pin up and then created a festive, glittery gradient… you could even add nail stickers or gems to make them even more glamorous!
Follow these easy steps to complete this look:
You will need… some skin coloured or white press on nails
Some plain red, sparkly/glittery red and clear nail varnish
Some hole page reinforcers (you know, the small white round stickers to protect punched holes in paper? Yeah them!)
1 – place a hole reinforcer at the base of each nail, just creating that small half moon shape at the bottom. Keeping it quite small will keep it natural and subtle
2 – paint a base coat of plain red nail varnish – the hole reinforcers stickers will keep the half moon area the natural colour of the nails
3 – once the red is dry, starting at the top of each nail, add your glittery red. Paint it thick at the very top and then thin in out as you move down the nail. I’ve painted my two ring fingers nails (second from smallest) in full glitter to shake things up a bit!
4 – let it all dry! Then top with a top coat to secure the glitter and polish
Now, your nails are ready! Here’s how I apply my Express Manicure nails…
Arrange your nails as you will need them for each hand so they’re easy to grab when you’re ready…
1 – file your nails – file the top to keep them neat, file the edges so that they sit nicely under the false nails and file the top surface of your nail to help the adhesive stick
2 – wash and dry your hands
3 – use the alcohol pre-pad to cleanse your nails and get them ready for the adhesive
4 – remove the protective plastic and place each nail in place one at a time. Hold the nail tightly down for at least 10 seconds
Once all the nails are in place, keep pressing them down for a while and avoid getting your hands wet for at least an hour… great excuse not to do the housework for a while!
It’s usually easier and quicker to decorate your nails before you apply them! And you don’t have to worry about opposite handy messyness!
Now you’re festive ready! No mess, no glue, and they will look pretty professional!
To remove the nails, you can soak them in hot water or nail varnish remover, or I find, if you’ve had them on for a week or more, they tend to peel off fairly easily with a bit of a tug, starting at the edges.
Fun fact… why half moon? During the war when things were in short supply and women were doing more manual work, they started to leave the base of their nails (and sometimes the tips as well) to make it less obvious when their nails stared to grown out or became chipped… this became a fashion statement which has lasted till today!
Superdrug are currently offering a buy one get one half price offer… so what are you waiting for?
